How to fix a leaking tap
A leaking tap is one of the most common plumbing problems in a home, and it can be a nuisance. If not fixed quickly, a leaking tap can cause water damage to the walls, floors, and furniture in your home.
Fortunately, fixing a leaking tap is a relatively simple task that can be done with a few basic tools.
With a little bit of patience and know-how, you should be able to fix a leaking tap in no time.
Step 1 – Shut off the water supply
The first step in fixing a leaking tap is to shut off the water supply. If the tap is connected to the main water supply for the house, you’ll need to find the main shut-off valve. If the tap is connected to a separate line, you’ll need to shut off the valve at the source. Once the water supply is shut off, you can begin to work on fixing the tap.
Step 2 – Remove the handle
The next step is to remove the handle that controls the tap. There may be small bolts or screws holding it in place, so you’ll need to unscrew and remove them before you can remove the handle. Once you have the handle off, you should be able to see a series of washers and gaskets that are responsible for the leak. If they are worn out and damaged, you’ll need to replace them.
Step 3 – Replace the washers
You can purchase the necessary washers and gaskets at any home improvement store. Be sure to bring along the old parts so you can find the exact size and shape needed. After you have the new parts you can then install them in the same order as the old parts were removed.
Step 4 – Replace the handle
Once the new washers and gaskets are installed, you can reattach the handle and turn the water back on. If you have done the job correctly, the tap should no longer be leaking. If it is still leaking, you may have to try and tighten the bolts and screws that hold the handle in place. If that doesn’t work, you may need to try replacing the washers and gaskets again.
That’s it – the leaking tap is repaired!
If you’re tap is still leaking however, it may be necessary to call a plumber to help you out. A professional plumber will be able to quickly diagnose and fix the problem.
